1. Describe how the nursing image is perceived today. Explain how you would further the image of a professional nurse.
I must admit that I love being part of “the most trusted profession” (Brenan, 2023). The responsibility with which we must enter each and every interaction with our patients must acknowledge the trust that we are given. I love the quote I read from a nurse, who stated, “One of the reasons we are the most trusted is because of our ability to connect with our patients and build relationships with them and their families” (Royals, 2020). The aspect of nursing that drew me first to the profession was the desire for profound connection with patients in their time of need. I intentionally pursue the idea of “meeting patients where they are”, to truly connect with them, and partner with them in their recovery, and reaching towards their version of thriving. I hope I am making a positive impact on the profession, and I believe it to be an honor to call myself a nurse.
4. Review certifications or nursing degrees that you are interested in or might consider in the future and list what the requirements are for obtaining that certification or degree. Explain how the certification or degree would be of value in your nursing practice.
I am going far out on a limb by putting this down in writing, but there is a part of me that would love to pursue my PhD in nursing. I have a teaching background with my first degree being a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education. I enjoy teaching people and so I would like to see more what it would take to get a doctorate in nursing. There are programs, for example Walden University, in which the program is online and the requirement it to have a bachelor’s degree in nursing in order to begin. From their website they state: “BSN-PhD: To be considered for this doctoral program track, you must have a current, active RN license, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or equivalent from an accredited school, and meet the general admission requirements” (Walden University, 2023). If I were to pursue this level of education in nursing I believe it would be of value to my nursing practice in that I would use it to teach others whether in a healthcare facility or the next generation of nurses. It’s a pretty lofty goal but I would like to research it more and see if I may want to pursue it any farther.

1. Describe how the nursing image is perceived today. Explain how you would further the image of a professional nurse.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic nurses and other healthcare professionals alike were deemed to be “heroes”. You begin your journey through nursing school and you are taught that nurses are the number 1 trusted profession. It is important to reflect within yourself and decide if that is a role you want to take on. If you do decide to move forward with the career, you will begin to realize that some people have very particular ways in which they think a nurse should look, or should act. This may be influenced by media intake, whether it be from the news or from TV shows. Media portrayals were seen as contributing to the inconsistent image and lack of understanding by the public. Portrayals of nursing and healthcare in general are highly varied, often inaccurate, and frequently focus on extreme cases. (Godsey, 2020) The image of the nurse will vary from person to person, especially based on experience. There are some people who have a nurse who leaves such a lasting impression it drives them to become a nurse as well; while others have a nurse who leaves such an impression that they have PTSD related to their ICU stay. Above all, I think nursing schools try to prepare their students to become the embodiment of a number 1 trusted professional. This may look like compassion, advocacy, respectability, and competency; among other traits that make a desirable nurse. As far as my image of nursing, I’d like to enter the field looking towards the future. One where nurses don’t need to look a certain way and are not asked to abandon their identity to accept this new role. I intend on remaining compassionate, competent, and teachable. Actions will speak louder than words, and in doing so I hope to leave a (good) lasting impression on the people that I take care of; one in which they felt safe and cared for. 2. Review certifications or nursing degrees that you are interested in or might consider in the future and list what the requirements are for obtaining that certification or degree. Explain how the certification or degree would be of value in your nursing practice.
When I think about the ways in which I’d like to further my nursing degree, the possibilities seem endless, and almost overwhelming. The idea of becoming a flight nurse has always intrigued me, but so has the thought of becoming a nurse practitioner as well. Looking at a job opening for a flight nurse at UCHealth Aurora, it appears as though you need to have a bachelors in nursing science, a flight nurse certification, basic life support (BLS), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), pediatric advanced life support (PALS), neonatal resuscitation (NRP), and any one of the following: transport professional advanced trauma course (TPATC), or TNCC (trauma nurse core course) or advanced trauma care for nurses (ATCN). I know at my facility we offer ACLS and PALS courses, and it looks like UCHealth offers the ATCN course as well. I believe that ACLS and PALS would benefit me whether or not I decide to move towards becoming a flight nurse because I intend on working in critical care; which can be any age. Continued education is part of why I love this profession. Receiving an advanced trauma care certificate would most likely help me to feel confident in my ability to take care of more critical patients, like those you’d expect to see on Flight-for-Life. Additionally, the flight nurse certification revolves around the factors to consider being that you are up in the air and with a potentially unstable patient. Their content outline lists the following: general principles of flight transport nursing practice, resuscitation principles, trauma, medical emergencies, and special populations. (Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing, 2021)
