So I think a lot of us are familiar with the respiratory system. There was one word that stood out to be the most which, is bronchitis. I say this because I’ve had it on three separate occasions. It was due to a viral infection that somehow, I keep getting. It is not the best feeling in the world. I kept on coughing and coughing until I had to spit out all the phlegm. The worst part was when the mucus would build up in my lungs, and you could see it on the x-ray. The mucus caused me the inability to breathe ever so often. Learning that Streptococcus pyogenes has a cell wall that avoids the host defenses was a concept that took me a couple of times to read. It also has several other destructive toxins and enzymes that can also damage the host cell.

Hi Karen,
Your blog caught my interest because I’ve never had bronchitis or pneumonia. How did your provider determine that it was S. pyogenes and what was the treatment given? On a side note, I believe that the conditions/infections and injuries we experience will only make us better medical providers :).

When I first had it I was 16 and the doctors stuck a swab in my throat and my nose. Then decided to give me an x-ray after they tested my saliva and mucus. They showed me my x-rays and it looked like cotton balls spread out in my lungs. Which represented the mucus. They actually gave me steroids in a inhaler and a nebulizer. One of my medications was called albuterol. Thank you for having interest in this Luis.
