Consider the organization you currently work for, or one you worked for in the past. How were the safety and health goals and objectives communicated to employees? Was it effective? How could it have been done better?
REPLY TO: CHARLES BARNETTAs a new hire with my organization, you receive a mandatory interview and briefing with the health and Safety Officer that works with us. This is a very basic briefing that tells new hires what is expected, where to find information like SDS’s, location of important forms and safety briefs from the past that are relevant. Being with a fire department safety is such a big and important aspect of what we do. Honestly, I feel like my organization does really well overall with communicating safety objectives and goals for the department. For existing employees were receive annual briefings, to include hands on safety training on multiple different issues and items ranging from heat related safety and emergencies in the summer to cold and ice safety in the winter to anything in between. Job specific safety is communicated to us year-round with emails from the safety officer, bulletin board announcements, and in person briefs. As a department we will also send out safety issues found by ourselves to everyone, including the Safety Officer, to ensure that everyone is aware of issues as they arise and can be prepared. I think one of the only ways this might be improved is it can, at times, take the Safety Officer too long to update issues or to inform us of a change but really that’s just me nitpicking the issue.
