The focus is on interviewing someone from another cultural background. Write 2-3 typed, double-spaced pages addressing the following:
1. Identify behaviors which could be considered symptoms of mental illness or unacceptable in the US but are interpreted differently in that person’s culture.
2. Ask your interviewee about behaviors which could be considered symptoms of mental illness or unacceptable in their culture but are interpreted differently here in the US. – How is mental illness viewed in that person’s culture?
– What are the barriers to accessing mental health care here in the US for someone from that person’s culture?
– Discuss similarities and differences in approaches to time, silence, proxemics, body language, and eye contact.
3. Reflect on what it was like and what you learned by doing this interview. Apply previous knowledge of a caring interview.
