Conflict is inevitable. It can occur between staff e.g. RN to RN or RN to CNA or RN to Manager or MD to MD) or it can be between discipline (e.g. RN to MD, or MD to RPh or RPh to RN) or it can occur between any member of health care team and client or caretakers. Consider the impact of conflict upon decision making, a just culture and high performing teams. Think about a situation in which there was less than optimal communication.
1. What parties were involved? Give a brief description of the situation.
2. Were there any adverse consequences to patient, staff or family member as a result of this miscommunication?
3. What communication technique or techniques were used to communicate with all the people involved?
4. How could the lapse in communication have been prevented? (Include communication techniques, interdisciplinary roles, negotiation, and other factors.)
5. How could that communication have been more collaborative among the different professionals?
6. What steps has your workplace taken to improve communication to prevent future errors?
