Devote no more than an hour on this writing assignment, and ideally, less. Do think about it prior to writing. You will notice that the template for reporting on your experiment is an outline, which is helpful to organize your thoughts. Don’t complete the assignment until we have finished Wednesday’s class at the earliest.
The purpose of assignment is to get you to think like a scientist using the Chapter 2 materials.
Use your own interests to find a topic. Your finished assignment should be submitted through Canvas. NOTE: Since you are new to Psychology, I am looking for a good effort but not necessarily a perfect experiment. You can be creative with your approach, but keep it realistic. In this assignment you play the role of the Psychologist, and your assignment is only to write up an experiment. Length, 1 to 2 pages double spaced.
Be sure to supply your name, date, class on document Also put in the Header or footer.
Use Bullet points for key items. The experiment is fictional so you can supply details that are plausible. Seek simplicity. You may want to think this over a bit before starting. Many possible topics could be used for your hypothetical experiment so choose something of interest to you.
Your write up must follow the basic template below (we will discuss this Wednesday in class):
1) Name or title of your experiment:
2) General Topic and the much narrower specific topic:
3) Hypothesis: Provide this educated guess. What do you expect your results to show?
4) Experimental Method (how you would run the experiment and supply specifics):
You need to supply the name the population of interest;
Experimental Group; Control Group; Independent Variable (manipulated by you the Experimenter) ;
Dependent Variable (measure of the results)
5) Results ( you come up with plausible data): Make it up.
6) Conclusion Come up with a brief discussion of your Experiment:
You can also: Define the measure(s) of Central Tendency, Mean, Medium, Mode of your data. (to be discussed next lecture)
You can graph your imaginary data too. How to draw a graph, X and Y axis, plot your data. Label axis of the graph(s).
If you make up fictional data you can describe it, does it cluster together?
Is there a peak around some part of the “x” or “y” axis? What would this indicate?
Put the essentials in Bold for quick grading This is 6 through 9 items min 6 items .
Your goal is to define these terms in some sort of experimental scenario which you come up with.
The Experiment is to trying to identify a Cause and Effect relationship. No additional statistics are actually required.
To be discussed in class some likely topics for your experiment might be. Smoking Cessation
Stopping a Gambling addiction
Weight management
Money management Anxiety reduction
Aggressive Behavior reduction and management
Stress management
Sleep schedule change towards 7-8 hrs. of sleep daily
Effective time management for academics
Increase or maintain regular physical fitness
Decrease of Alcohol or drug consumptive
come up with something of meaning to you.

IMP: Since you are new to Psychology, I am looking for a good effort but not a perfect experiment. *In this assignment you play the role of the Psychologist, and your assignment is only to write up an experiment. Length, 1 to 2 pages double spaced. If you have a graph then the length will increase as will the clarity of your data.
*Be sure to supply your name, date, class on document Also put in the Header or footer.
*Use Bullet points for key items. The experiment is fictional so you can supply details that are plausible. Seek simplicity. You should think this over a bit before starting. Many possible topics could be used for your hypothetical experiment so choose something of interest to you.
We could call this an introduction to the various aspects of an experiment .Outline follows,
Dr. Sullivan
1) Name or title of your experiment:
2) General Topic: Introduce the general topic area you are investigating and then the specific question (the research question) that your study is seeking to address. This is the much narrower specific topic you are working on.
3) Hypothesis: Provide this educated guess. Provide two, add an alternate Hypothesis:
4) Experimental Method (how you would run the experiment and supply specifics):
USE THE FOLLOWING SUBHEADINGS:
Participants:
You need to supply the name the population of interest;
How many participants or subjects are in the experiment?
Experimental Design:
Experimental Group;
Control Group; Experimental Design:
State the experimental design?
What is the Independent Variable IV (manipulated by you the Experimenter)?
How will this variable be presented to the subjects?
What is the Dependent Variable DV (measure of the results)?
Materials
List all the materials and measures
Procedures:
Describe the precise procedure you followed when carrying out your research i.e. exactly what you did.
Describe in sufficient detail to allow for replication of findings.
Be concise in your descriiption and omit extraneous / trivial details. E.g. you don’t need to include details regarding instructions, debrief, record sheets etc.
5) Results (you come up with plausible data):
Make up results. Name the statistical test being used. Add a graph or two: If you make up fictional data you can describe it, does it cluster together?
Is there a peak around some part of the “x” or “y” axis? What would this indicate.
6) Discussion or Conclusion Come up with a brief discussion of your Experiment:
To make sure you learn the most from this assignment you can also * Define the measure(s) of Central Tendency, Mean, Medium, Mode of your data. (to be discussed next lecture)
*You can graph your imaginary data too. How to draw a graph, X and Y axis, plot your data. Label each axis
