In Florida, there is a joint effort between the Florida Board of Nursing and the Florida Department of Health to establish standards of nursing practice, which begins with the identification of a need, for which the Florida Board of Nursing and the Department of Health establish a neglected aspect, to determine a need for new nursing practice standards that can address medical, technological, or federal regulations—subsequently, working groups consisting of experts, such as registered nurses and other health professionals, to determine the appropriate response to the identified need (Florida Department of Health, 2020).
Then, the working groups develop the literature review, identifying existing scientific sources on relevant nursing practice to create new standards. This is how developing publishs of the new implementations in practice begins, based on and using only scientific literature and clinical experience. Then, a space is opened in which public opinion is allowed; anyone can review the publishs of the new standards and make comments and suggestions. Once the public review phase is complete, a review of comments is initiated to make any necessary adjustments to the standards. Upon completion of the review, the final standards are submitted to the Florida Board of Nursing and the Department of Health for final approval to implement the new standards in Florida (Florida Department of Health, 2019).
These standards determine the minimum expectations and requirements for nursing practice in Florida, ensuring that nurses have the skills and knowledge necessary to provide quality care to their pediatric and gerontology patients (Craven & Hirnle, 2022). Likewise, these standards guide the evaluation, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the services received by pediatric and gerontological patients, helping nurses to offer comprehensive and personalized care. In the same way, the standards of practice for pediatric and gerontological care allow nursing professionals to be updated with advances, regulations, and best-authorized practices. This is how the practice standards are the basis of education and continuous training, allowing these two populations to maintain and improve skills and knowledge (Stuenkel et al., 2021).
