Begin by conducting a Folsom Lake College Library online database search about a topic in Child Development that you would like to explore for your Interview Paper. If you click on the link to the Folsom Lake College Library in the navigation bar at the left side of your course home page in Canvas, you will discover many online databases from which to search for your research articles. Some possible topics students might conduct a search for include the following: Childbirth; childbirth across cultures; twins or multiple births; children of divorce; children and poverty; effects of foster care; raising children with special needs; blended families; multi-ethnic families; adoption; prenatal development; home schools; private schools; public schools; preschool; eating disorders; childhood illness; birth order effects; discipline methods; parenting approaches; the role of grandparents; the role of extended families; the effects of urban, rural or suburban life on children’s play; and child care. Or, create your own!
After choosing a topic and conducting the Folsom Lake College Library search, write your chosen topic at the top of the page under your title. (Annotated references on the topic of the importance of pets during childhood). Write your references using the American Psychological Association (APA) style of references. The Folsom Lake College Library Databases provide the references in APA style for you. Just go to your article and look for the word “cite.” Click on it and a list of references styles will appear. Choose the one that says, APA. For additional examples of how to write them, see Purdue Owl Links to an external site.. This website will also cite them for you. Once there, you will see examples given of the various ways to write references. Most of you will probably use one of the following: an article from an online periodical; an article from an online periodical with no DOI assigned; an article from a database; a newspaper article; or a non-periodical web document. The Folsom Lake College Library will provide you with the URL (link). Just go to your article and look for the term “permalink” and click on it. Make sure that you can open all of the URL’s that you have included as a part of the references. What is a URL? It is the web address. URL’s that do not open will have points deducted. In other words, your URL’s should be hyperlinked. You can tell that URL’s are hyperlinked when they appear to be blue. I am only able to open databases from the Folsom Lake College Library, so do not include databases from other institutions such as the Sacramento State University databases, as they require a password.
Along with the references, a summary of each of the references is required. Three points of information that were new or helpful to you should be described in a minimum of 250 words for each of the 5 summaries. The total word count for the paper should be a minimum of 1250 words. The summaries of the articles must be in your own words.
Remember that this assignment will help you to be a more informed researcher when it comes to conducting the interviews for your interview paper. Choose a topic that will capture your interest!
