Students will take the role of a professional who will train doctors, physician assistants, nurses, social workers, health coaches, and other health professionals on the impact of living and working conditions, neighborhoods and/or class, and the connection to mental and physical well-being. Students will also provide information on the Personal Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), an evidence-based tool used to screen for depression and how this is useful with one of the below case studies: A Downward Spiral of Homelessness, A Case Study of Mark, or Dealing with Burnout. Students will select ONE of the three case studies to illustrate.
Students will develop a brochure of the intersection of one or more of the following: living and working conditions, neighborhoods, and/or class and the connection to physical and behavioral health outcomes.
Students will highlight social determinants of health, such as living and/or working conditions, class, and neighborhoods to mental, behavioral, and physical health outcomes of their selected case. Students will present one of the case studies listed: A Downward Spiral of Homelessness, A Case Study of Mark, or Dealing with Burnout on their brochure as their example then illustrate a minumum of four SDOH (living or working conditions, neighborhoods, and/or class). Additional info to keep in mind: Read the case studies and select ONE that you want to use for your educational brochure. Your brochure will indicate how to use the PHQ-9 and how your case study presents with depressive symptoms on the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9). Students will demonstrate an understanding of the cognitive, affective and somatic symptoms of depression. Please refer to this week’s reading on additional information discerning cognitive (thoughts), affective (feelings), and somatic (physical) symptoms of depression. PHQ-9 is available there. Please refer to the link for better understanding these symptoms. The Beck Depression Inventory is also helpful with understanding cognitive, affective, and somatic symptoms of depression.
