When using delegation guidelines, it is important to understand that states and/or jurisdictions have different laws and rules/regulations regarding delegation. It is the responsibility of the RN to know what is permitted in their state NPA, rules/regulations, and policies.
1. According to the Tennessee Nurse Practice Act (NPA); describe what rules delineate the specific steps for effective delegation by the RN.
• Outline what steps the RN must take to delegate appropriately. Include the nursing process (assessment, implementation, and evaluation) of the task delegated.
2. According to the Tennessee NPA; analyze how the RN would determine if the person taking on the delegated skill is qualified to perform the task.
3. Outline what RN skills are outside the scope of practice for either Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurses (LVN/LPN) or Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP).
4. Define what can occur if the RN delegates outside the scope of practice, both personally and professionally/legally.
