Galvan text Chapters 1, 2 & 3
Chapter 1: Writing Reviews of Academic Literature: An Overview (Pages 3 through 6…stop at Theoretical Articles)
Chapter 2: Learn to Navigate the Electronic Resources in Your University’s Library (Steps 1 and 2 not needed. Students need to enter their UIN to access the library when off campus)
Chapter 3: Selecting a Topic and Identifying Sources (Steps 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,7, 11, & 12)
Module 6 Assignment: Select a topic for the literature review. Find at least 5 primary source peer reviewed articles from the FGCU library on the topic of interest. In a word document, indicate the topic of interest and include a list of articles on the topic. Be sure to choose a topic that is specific and narrow enough to find at least 5 source primary peer reviewed articles on the topic. For this list, articles do not have to be in APA format. The articles must be in APA format in the final literature review assignment. However, in your assignment you MUST provide me with the authors’/researchers’ names, the title of the article, and name of the journal. If you do not include the proper information and I am unable to find your articles, a grade of 0 will be earned for this assignment. You must also include the title you will be using for the Literature Review.
Topic too broad: Examining causes, symptoms, and treatments for hypertension.
Good topic: Examining treatment options for hypertension
For this assignment, you must include your topic–which in large part could be the title of your paper. See ‘good topic’ above. Another poor example–a topic too broad could be: Energy drinks and college students. This is a poor choice for a literature review because the topic is very broad. One particular aspect of college students and energy drinks needs to be investigated so this assignment is manageable.
Due by 9am, Friday September 22.
No late work is accepted in this course.
Technology is not an excuse for late on non-submission of assignments
PLEASE NOTE: Once graded, assignments cannot be resubmitted to improve a score.
Selecting a Topic/Reviewing the Literature
A great overview for selecting a topic/reviewing the literature and writing a literature review may be found on our library website specific for our course:
Research Methods in Healthcare: IHS 4504
Preparing for the Literature Review Assignment:
The major writing assignment in this course is a literature review. A minimum of 5 articles that are primary sources from peer reviewed journals are required to construct the literature review. Students may use more than 5 sources to write the literature review. Information from ‘review’ articles, also known as secondary sources, may be included in the literature review, but students must use a minimum of 5 articles that are primary sources from peer reviewed journals as a foundation for the literature review assignment.
Note: The required textbook readings for searching the literature provide a good example in searching databases for a non-health related problem. Students will construct a literature review addressing a problem in healthcare. Therefore, use the following file as a step by step process to find articles on a topic:
Narrowing down a topic
Do not use meta-analyses to construct the literature review as a meta-analysis is the statistical procedure for combining data from multiple studies. A meta-analysis is not a primary source.
Do not use systematic reviews to construct the literature review as a systematic review summarizes the results of available studies. A systematic review is not a primary source
Reviewing the Literature (read the following file):
Differentiating primary and secondary sources (review articles)
What is a peer reviewed journal?
A peer reviewed journal is a journal in which evaluation of a person’s work (an article) is done by a group of people in the same occupation, profession, or industry.
Databases provide links/options to check in order to make sure only articles from peer reviewed journals will be returned from a search. Always choose the peer reviewed option when searching through databases.
Here is a video for help:
Selecting peer reviewed journals
At the end of this session, students will be able to:
Identify a problem in healthcare
Select an appropriate/manageable topic for a literature review
Discuss the difference between a primary source and review article (secondary source)
Demonstrate proficiency in navigating library journal databases
Select primary source articles from peer reviewed journals
