Most Impactful Discussion The discussions throughout this class have been eye-opening; I’ve enjoyed reading my peers’ thoughts and responses and receiving their and the professor’s feedback. From my perspective, the most impactful discussion was our discussion on human nature and human values (week two). As a socially responsible practitioner, it is important to understand that all individuals reach their current place in life on a path that is entirely their own – through their unique socialization within their communities, culture, family dynamics, etc. This touches on the ability to connect with others “with the eyes of another, hear with the ears of another, and feel with a heart of another”, without doing so we can’t understand others and create a bond. We have different viewpoints and reading how my peers responded to various Adlerian theories solidified that although we are similar is some ways, we are different and that is a beautiful thing. Most Impactful Assignment As for the most impactful assignment from the standing of my personal development, I would have to choose the leadership strengths reflection assignment from week three. I am an Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force, which puts me in a leadership position. Within my current position, I am expected to be a leader and mentor, and I am actively working towards finding my footing as both. Diving into my leadership strengths highlighted weaknesses that I need to work on and provided an opportunity to reflect on those weaknesses and address how to improve them, for myself and those around me. Mindfulness is a skill that I am working on, and I believe that the only way to improve is to be able to view yourself in an unbiased way and take stock of where you are and where you want to be, in doing so the path can become clear. In that way, that is how I am carrying forward the impact of this assignment, not limited to how I am as a leader, but in aspects of my life that I wish to improve. Response 2
The conversation that had the most impact on me during our course occurred during the week 6 discussion. In this conversation, we gave tips to discouraged employees of a shelter for the unhoused to help them regain morale. This conversation resonates with me because it not only simulates something that we may come across in our work as professionals and involves supporting those who are dedicated to a pressing social justice matter, but it allowed an opportunity (and reminder) to practice speaking to employees as humans and not just clients/workers. One thing that stood out most to me in that discussion was how we all mentioned something in regard to mental health and self-care. This is something that I will always continue to place value on when practicing as it is a key piece of the field of psychology. Focusing on positive mental health practices, understanding what that looks like on an individual level, and advocating for better conditions and the well-being of one’s clients are all practices aligned with an Adlerian approach. The most impactful assignment for me was the leadership reflection. Leadership has been a theme in my life as of late. Professionally, I have experienced many back-to-back shifts in leadership that have each affected the culture of the workplace in some way. While these shifts may have been inconvenient at the time, it was also an opportunity to observe various styles and their impact/reception. What I learned from each of these leaders has helped me to develop my own style that I have become confident with. I am now in a position where I am responsible for not only my own staff but also the operations of a new department. I plan to take my leadership style and what I have learned in this class into my new role to support my staff as both workers and individuals while also creating a program that serves our clients in a way that is humanistic and encourages self-advocacy/resilience.
